Digital Photos and Image Resolution

The digital image size that a 3 MB digital camera generates, is something like this: 2,560 x 1,704 pixels, which is more than sufficient for a 3" x 3" mug decoration.

You can use this formula to determine if your .tif or .jpg files have a sufficient resolution for mug decorations (which should be 300 dpi's.):

Using above sample, divide the total image pixels by the desired resolution to obtain the size/dimension in inches:

  • 2,560 pixels/300 resolution = 8.53" at a resolution of 300 dpi's
  • 1,704 pixels/300 resolution = 5.68" at a resolution of 300 dpi's.

Hence the image size generated by your digital camera is more than sufficient. In fact we could use your image for the maximum size we can decorate on our 11-oz mugs of 3" x 8.33" after appropriate cropping.

If you open a totally white image, let's say in PhotoShop, with a resolution of 300 dpi's and with these dimensions: 3" x 3", then PhotoShop will tell you that the total file size is: 2.32MB. Our file up-loader will accept files of up to 5MB of total file size.
