France, a republic
in western Europe, is bounded on the north by the English
Channel, the Strait of Dover, and the North Sea; on the
northeast by Belgium, Luxembourg; on the east by Germany,
Switzerland, and Italy; on the southeast by Monaco and the
Mediterranean Sea; on the south by Spain and Andorra; and on the
west by the Bay of Biscay. France is approximately hexagonal in
shape, with an extreme length from north to south of about 600
mi and a maximum width of about 580 mi.
The capital and largest
city of France is Paris. Marseille is its mayor port. Lyon is an
industrial center famous for its textiles, though the city’s
chemical industry is now more important. Other major cities
include Toulouse, an industrial and trade center; Nice a resort;
Strasbourg , a Rhine River port and industrial and commercial
center; Nantes noted for sugar refining, shipbuilding, and a
variety of other industries; Bordeaux is a seaport and wine and
industrial center; and Montpellier, a commercial and
manufacturing center.
