The Austrian flag is one of the oldest in the world. It dates from 1191, when Duke Leopold V fought in the Battle of Acre during the Third Crusade. The only part of his clothing not stained red by blood was a white band beneath his belt. The flag has been used since at least 1230, and assumed its current form in 1918 following World War I.
