Christ the
Redeemer (Rio de Janeiro) (Portuguese, Cristo Redentor),
monumental statue of Christ overlooking the city of Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, and one of the city's most famous sights. It is
situated on top of Corcovado Mountain, 713 m (2340 ft) high, and
is reached either by road or by a funicular railway. It was
commissioned from French sculptor Paul Landowski in 1921, to
celebrate the centenary of Brazil's independence from Portugal
in that year, and was completed in 1931. The granite figure
stands 30 m (100 ft) high and is set on a pedestal 6 m (20 ft)
high. Christ is portrayed with his arms outstretched, as if
embracing the city.
