To get Mother Nature and our Calendar Year in sync some number juggling is called for:
As the earth's trip around the sun cannot be measured in neat, whole numbers and the solar year is approximately 365-1/4 days long, one day every 4 years has to be added to the calendar to get back on track again. After all, the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere should always fall on March 21 and the little square boxes on our calendar should correspond with what is all around us: Mother Nature, the heavenly bodies and all...all in a huge harmonic concert.
It seems that the Egyptians where very aware of this but it took the Roman emperor Julius Caesar to bring us into what is now known as the Western World. The Romans originally started the new year on March 1, and alternated between months of 31 and 30 days, and ended the year with the month of February. When it was decided to name one month in honor of emperor Augustus Caesar - namely the month of August - he could not be given a month with only 30 days in light of the fact that Julius Caesar's 31 days in July. Hence August was made a month with also 31 days and this "extra" day was taken away from the last month of the year, namely February. Over time it became clear that the Julian calendar somewhat overcompensated the facts and Pope Gregory sprang into action in 1582 to reform and bring our calendar up to speed, so to speak by making up for the 11-day gap and thus "invented" the calendar we still use until the present day, starting the year with the month of January. This explains the fact that, for example, George Washington was born on Feb 11, 1732 according to the Julian calendar, but on Feb 22 according to the Gregorian calendar. In a calendar that does not take account any of these variations and has also no provisions for leap years, a given date migrates across the year as the Muslim lunar calendar does where you can have Ramadan actually fall in the winter or high summer. Just imagine how our farmers would like such a calendar: they would never know when to plant.
